FAQ

In Star Citizen, we are 930 years in the future. The in-game year is 2955.

Getting Started

For many, getting started in Star Citizen begins with a so-called Free Fly event, which CIG hosts multiple times a year during the alpha phase.

To play the game for free during a Free Fly event, all you need to do is create an account, download the launcher, and install the game.

Note: During an active Free Fly event, purchasing a game package is not required!

Here's how to proceed:

  1. Create your account using this registration link and make sure the 12-digit referral code is pre-filled. With the code, you'll receive 5.000 UEC (in-game currency) for free: STAR-2MXF-NG7V
  2. Download the launcher.
  3. Install the launcher, open it, and log in with your account details.
  4. Install the game and start playing.

Referral bonus:

During a Free Fly event, CIG occasionally gives away ships, vehicles, or armor sets as a referral bonus if you decide to purchase a game package worth at least 40 USD during the Free Fly period.

Check the box at the top of this page to see if a referral bonus is currently active. Additionally, discounted game packages with higher-value ships are often available during such events.

Outside of a Free Fly event!

If you haven't created an account yet, follow the steps described in the previous tab. Once you've created an account, the next step is to add a game package to your account.

Here's how to proceed:

  1. Purchase a game package and watch out for deals! Game packages are marked with "STARTER PACK" and include:
    • The game as a digital download
    • The ship you selected
    • A insurance (usually 3, 6, or 12 months)
    • A corresponding hangar

Follow the instructions as described in the previous tab.

If you played Star Citizen for free during a Free Fly event and want to continue playing, you will need to purchase a game package.

A game package includes both the game download and a spaceship. You can either choose one of the standard game packages or - if you're ready to invest a bit more - purchase a package with a better ship.

During Free Fly events or on holidays, there are often special offers where you can save between 10% and 25%. Take advantage of these discounts!

My Starter Package Tip (outside of sales):

Always buy the cheapest starter package. You can upgrade to a better ship later in the webshop and only pay the difference.

The following text regarding ship insurance and guarantees was discussed at CitizenCon 2024 and is part of Star Citizen 1.0. In the Alpha, there are no guarantees, and expiring insurance is not yet in place!

With version 1.0, the insurance system in Star Citizen is being fundamentally overhauled. The previous Lifetime Insurance (LTI) has lost significance and has been replaced with a more differentiated system, where insurance and guarantees are now separated.

Ships from the Webshop (Pledge Store)

  • Guarantee: All ships purchased through the official webshop come with a permanent guarantee. This ensures that the ship and its standard components will be replaced if lost, provided the insurance is active.
  • Insurance: These ships come with an initial insurance (e.g., LTI or time-limited). In order for the guarantee to apply, the insurance must be active. If the insurance expires, the ship can be replaced for an in-game fee.

Ships Acquired or Crafted in-Game

  • Insurance: Players must purchase insurance for these ships with in-game currency. Without active insurance and guarantee, the ship will be permanently lost if destroyed.
  • Guarantee: These ships do not come with a guarantee by default. However, a guarantee can be earned through gameplay, such as reaching "Citizenship" status.

Differences Between Insurance and Guarantee

  • Insurance:
    • Covers the replacement of the ship, depending on the chosen insurance level.
    • There are three tiers:
      • Tier 1: Covers only the hull and standard components.
      • Tier 2: Also includes custom components.
      • Tier 3: Also includes decorations and interior fittings.
    • If the ship is lost without active insurance, no refund will be provided.
  • Guarantee:
    • Applies only to ships with active insurance.
    • Allows for full replacement of the ship and covered components, rather than a mere monetary refund.
    • Can be earned for in-game acquired ships through gameplay.

New Options in the Insurance System

  • Monetary Refund: Without a guarantee, the insurance will pay the current monetary value of the ship, based on its age and condition.
  • Acquiring Guarantees in-Game: Players can earn guarantees through certain gameplay elements, such as reaching "Citizenship" status, which can be applied to ships acquired in-game.
  • Insurance Tiers: Additional insurance tiers (Level 2 and 3) can be purchased in-game with in-game currency to cover custom components and decorations.

Summary

  • Webshop Ships: Come with a permanent guarantee and an initial insurance. The guarantee only applies if the insurance is active.
  • In-Game Acquired Ships: Must be insured separately and can earn a guarantee through gameplay.
  • Insurance: Covers the replacement of the ship, depending on the chosen insurance level.
  • Guarantee: Allows for the full replacement of the ship when the insurance is active.

It is up to the players to ensure their ships are properly insured and to acquire guarantees when necessary to ensure full replacement in the event of a loss.

In Star Citizen, ships and vehicles are insured, allowing for replacement in case of loss or destruction. However, the insurance mechanics are not fully implemented during the current Alpha phase.

All ships and vehicles are currently automatically insured, and there are no in-game costs for renewing or maintaining insurance.

Overview of Insurance Types

With the full release of Star Citizen, a tiered insurance system will be introduced, offering various coverage levels:

  • Level 1: Basic Insurance
    • Covers the hull and standard components of the ship.
    • This insurance is included in most game packages and must be renewed after it expires.
    • During the Alpha phase, this insurance is automatically active and does not require renewal.
  • Level 2: Advanced Component Insurance
    • Additional coverage for custom components and upgrades.
    • This insurance can be purchased in-game and supplements the basic insurance.
  • Level 3: Full Insurance
    • Includes, in addition to Level 2 coverage, cosmetic adjustments such as paint jobs and interior decorations.
    • Also available in-game and is optional.

It is important to note that these extended insurance options will be available after the full release and are not yet active during the Alpha phase.

Lifetime Insurance (LTI)

Lifetime Insurance (LTI) is a special type of insurance in the game. It permanently covers the hull and standard equipment of a ship - no extension or renewal of the insurance is necessary.

LTI is only available for ships purchased under certain conditions, such as during special sales events or through certain supporter packages.

Important information about LTI:

  • Custom components and loaded cargo are not covered by LTI.
  • Ships purchased directly in-game (with in-game currency) do not receive LTI.
  • LTI cannot be purchased separately or transferred to other ships.

Insurance Requirement and Consequences

After the full release, it will be necessary to actively manage insurance:

  • Insurance Expiration: If a ship's insurance expires and is not renewed, the ship may be permanently lost in case of destruction.
  • Warning Messages: The game will notify players when they attempt to use a ship without active insurance.
  • Replacement: For ships purchased with real money (through the RSI website), there will be options to replace them after the insurance expires for an additional in-game fee.

During the current Alpha phase, there is no need to worry about insurance - all ships are automatically protected. However, after the full release, a comprehensive insurance system will be introduced, requiring players to actively manage their insurance.

It is worth familiarizing yourself with the various insurance options early to avoid losing valuable ships and components in case of a mishap.

No one knows where Star Citizen is headed. Will the game be a flop or the largest MMO in the world?

Registering your account not only grants you access to the game, but also secures your unique player name - your personal handle in the Star Citizen universe.

Whether you can also use your player name for your base will be revealed soon.

As a new player, you will quickly come across the term PTU. The PTU (Public Test Universe) is a testing environment where upcoming patches and updates are tested in waves before being released to the LIVE server.

When a new patch enters the PTU, the so-called Evocati* (EPTU) are the first to gain access, testing the build under NDA. Once the worst bugs are fixed, the individual waves are released, and all other players gain access.

  • Evocati Test Flight Group: Handpicked testers who have committed to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Very experienced volunteer testers selected based on long-term constructive feedback, quantity and quality of bug reports, and activity.
  • Wave 1: Access for the most active players based on hours played during the last two major patch cycles.
    • Subscribers
    • Legatus Navium Concierge Level Supporters
  • Wave 2: Access is granted to the next most active players based on hours played in the last two major patch cycles.

  • Wave 4: Access is granted to the next active players based on play hours in the last two major patch cycles.

UEC = United Earth Credits. This is the in-game currency in Star Citizen. The game is currently in development, so the current in-game currency is aUEC. The "a" stands for Alpha. This currency will be replaced by UEC when Star Citizen is released. It is likely that there will be a renaming to bUEC during the Beta phase, but this has not been confirmed by CIG.

As in many other games, you can also purchase UEC through the shop on the RSI website. 5.000 UEC costs a little over 5 dollars/euros.

Currently, it is not worth spending real money on UEC. You can earn them in-game within a few minutes, and they have no real value. With 5.000 UEC, you can't even buy a decent armor set. So, stay away from it!

There are numerous offers on eBay promising millions of aUEC for little money. Stay away from them! For several reasons:

  1. Star Citizen is in Alpha, and the databases could be wiped at any time. In that case, the purchased in-game currency will be lost as well.
  2. CIG is not responsible if there are issues with your account.
  3. Your account could be banned.

If Star Citizen goes into full release, the currency will change from aUEC to UEC.

This situation describes the grey market. It is not forbidden to buy ships or other items on eBay or other third-party sites.

The grey market can be useful for collectors, as you can sometimes find rare items/ships on eBay and similar platforms. However, the truly rare items are not usually available there, or they come at a very high price.

You should also be aware that you will not receive support from CIG if you are scammed.

Tip

Money is always important in an MMO. In *Star Citizen*, you can earn quick money early on through mining and delivery missions.

Star-Citizen Pyro-RYT Multi-Tool

For foot mining, you need the Pyro RYT Multi-Tool, the Ore Bit Mining Attachment, and a MacFlex "Backpack" Core.

With these, you can easily earn your first aUEC. Head to the caves, mine the ores, and then sell them. You can buy this equipment with your starting money. Don't buy weapons or special armor.

Your priority should be the equipment for manual mining! Your first goal should be the Greycat ROC, which you can buy in-game.

The ROC is a ground vehicle that allows you to comfortably mine stones from the driver's seat. The vehicle can spawn at outposts and has a mining head for extracting small gemstones from planet and moon surfaces, as well as a tractor beam that pulls the gemstones into the vehicle's inventory. With this vehicle, you can make quite a bit of money quickly.

System Requirements

Star Citizen is not well optimized at the moment. A good reference point can be taken from the telemetry data provided by CIG.

The following system requirements are community recommendations. The official specifications from CIG are far from the reality:

  • Windows 10 - Anniversary Update or Windows 11 (64bit)
  • DirectX 11.1 - Graphics card with a minimum of 8 GB RAM (12 GB recommended)
  • 32 GB recommended
  • SSD strongly recommended
  • Approximately 100 GB of free disk space
  • Intel i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or higher
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2080 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or higher

Occasionally, there is a wipe that resets your account. This means that all of your progress is reset. This includes money, reputation, and in-game purchased ships, vehicles, and equipment. However, items purchased with real money, such as ships, are NOT affected by the wipe.

Wipes are becoming less frequent. However, it may happen that after a major patch, certain database structures are reset. Currently, CIG is mainly focusing on wiping the inventory. Money and reputation are often retained.

Yes, there is an official forum called Spectrum. Here, you will find chats in various languages as well as numerous threads for issues, bugs, tips, frustrations, and official patch notes to keep the community informed about the development of Star Citizen.

Christopher Roberts dreams of a single game universe where all players from around the world can play together. This dream has been attempted to be realized since Alpha 3.18.

A game universe where all players from around the world can meet is an enormous challenge. Something like this has never been done before, and no one knows if it will actually work.

To realize this vision, Persistent-Streaming (PES) was introduced with Alpha 3.18, which places items persistently in the game that have been dropped by other players. For example, a player places a weapon at location XY. It will stay there until another player picks it up or the weapon decays.

The ultimate goal is dynamic server meshing. With Alpha 4.0, static server meshing was introduced and is already working well. If dynamic server meshing works, then all doors are open for an all-encompassing game universe where millions of players can meet.

Cloud Imperium Games protects players through the Easy Anti-Cheat software, which uses hybrid anti-cheat mechanisms to counter hacking and cheating in multiplayer PC games.

There will always be glitches, and exploiting them can lead to a permanent ban. However, it will not be easy to cheat in Star Citizen, as the entire infrastructure is streamed server-side. Everything is later stored in cloud databases and constantly synchronized.

First of all, you need an account, a game package, and a powerful PC for Star Citizen.

The system requirements for Star Citizen:

  • Graphics card with at least 6GB to 8GB VRAM. 12GB VRAM is optimal
  • Powerful CPU
  • 16 GB+ RAM (32 GB recommended)
  • SSD highly recommended
  • Approximately 100 GB of free hard drive space

No, Star Citizen cannot be played offline. Even the single-player campaign is expected to require an active internet connection.

Star Citizen is not a subscription. You have the option to support the project through a subscription, but the game itself is not a subscription. You only purchase the game package. That's all you need.

Chris Roberts mentioned that in 2022, there were new records for player numbers. The average number of monthly active players was around 240,000, which is a 33 percent increase compared to the previous year.
